However, the son becomes an easy target and is easily lured into the work, which is harshly condemned by the father upon discovery. Nevertheless, eight years followed and Calogero (now older young man) relentlessly revisits his relationship with Sonny and pays frequent visits to him secretly and without Lorenzo’s knowledge. There is also an Italian boy’s gang to which Calogero belonged though being discouraged by Sonny. Just about the time, the movie illustrates Calogero fall in love with Jane Williams, a girl with an African American background and decides to date her. Nevertheless, there was heightened tension and dislike between the two races (Italians as well as the African American) as illustrated by the Italian gang beating up the African American boys who pass by the neighborhood cycling. Despite Calogero being an Italian and an affiliate to the gang, he tries much to defend Jane’s brother, Willie who later accuses him of assaulting him during the scuffle. It was during the date organized by Calogero that a confrontation between Willie and Calogero ensues and out of temper, calogero addresses Willie using racial slur, a reason that made the two walk away. The hatred between the blacks as well as the Italian gang continues and in retaliatory moves, harm is meted on the opposing side and in one such a move, Calogaro’s gang friends perish in a car crash and explosion caused by Molotov cocktails’ explosion. However, the young man is lucky to escape after Sonny orders him out of the car while they drive for the revenge. The movie shows Calogero run to pay gratitude to Sonny for saving him only to find him assassinated. He later discovers the assassin as to a son to the man that Sonny killed while Colagero witnessed at a rather tender age. What follow are people streaming in to pay last respect to Sonny among them being the man saved at Calogero’s childhood and his real father who acknowledges Sonny’s efforts to save Calogero (DeNiro, para 1-10). The movie therefore revolves around Calogero, the Italian boy who grows under the watch of Lorenzo as well as Sonny. Deviance is a central theme in the plot of the movie as is depicted severally mainly by Calogero as well as Lorenzo. In declining to cooperate with the Mobsters, Lorenzo depicts defiance though with a justification of his unwillingness to join the illegal activities done by the group. However, Calogero accepts to work with the group amidst his father’s efforts to stop him secretly until he finally confronts Sonny and cautions him against having Calogero in his group. This shows deviance and is later revisited when Lorenzo sees Calogero driving Sonny’s car. Besides, Calogero defies Sonny’s advice not to be part of the Italian gang and actively participates in the activities of this gang in the neighborhood. Calogero therefore portrays full deviance to the two of his father figures, Lorenzo and Sonny. Inequality on racial/ethnical basis is another outstanding theme in the movie as shown by the existence of gangs formed on racial lines. The Italian gang from which Calogero belonged hated and often charged on the African-American boys in utter hatred...Download file to see next pagesRead MoreEditSoundtrack Credits
